Being unemployed is one of those things that feels awesome and terrifying at the same time. Awesome because you don’t have to get up early every day and you haven’t had so much free time in ages. Terrifying because you have no income and money runs out so fast.

There will probably be periods of employment and periods of unemployment in every person’s life. No matter what the circumstances are, your best option is always to make the most of it. Here are some things you can do to make your unemployment less terrifying and more valuable.

1. Keep A Regular Day-to-Day Schedule

Don’t get too comfortable binging watch your favorite TV shows. As tempting as permanently moving into your sweatpants may seem, keeping a regular schedule is one way to stay productive and focused. While unemployed, if you continue to start your day early, you are more likely to get more things done. Also, keeping up with day to day tasks will help you stay active and less likely to become depressed.

2. Consider Temporary Jobs

One of the easiest ways to bridge the employment gap is to find temporary contract work or work with a temp agency. Since you don’t have a 9 – 5 job now, why not take on a temporary assignment? The key is to get people to see your work and to see what you’re capable of. Find something that you’re good at or interested in, if you do a great job, whoever hired you is more likely to connect you to a permanent position.

There are numerous contract works, temp work agencies, or online jobs that you could tap on with your free time. Even if this is not a permanent solution, you will be in a better position financially while you search for something permanent.

3. Take A Career Training Course

A good way to move forward is to for ways to increase your transferable skills. Keeping your brain sharp can help you stay focused and learn some new job skills. When you take a class in your field, you are also showing that you are serious about your work and that you take initiative.

Look for courses or programs you could take, especially the ones designed for career advancement. You’ll be more qualified for new positions with extra training in your next line of work. Refreshing your resume, and interview and job skills will also make your next job hunt easier.

3. Volunteer

No matter what industry you’re in, volunteer work makes you more marketable. When you volunteer, it shows that you are passionate and willing to contribute. When companies hire, they are looking not only for people who can get the job done but also for people with character and integrity.

Volunteering is an excellent way to spend your free time when you’re unemployed. If you volunteer in an area related to your job qualifications, you can often include the experience on your resume for your next job search.

4. Re-organize Your Life

Apply for Canada Student Service Grant (CSSG)

Are you a post-secondary student or recent graduate? Do you want to help with COVID-19 response and give back to your community this summer? Do you want to build your resume and earn a grant this Fall?

What is CSSG?

The Government of Canada has recently created the Canada Student Service Grant (CSSG), a program that will provide thousands of qualified post-secondary students with learning and volunteer opportunities to address relevant COVID-19 challenges at Canadian not-for-profits during summer 2020. Students participating will be eligible to apply for a grant, which will provide up to $5,000 to be used towards post-secondary education costs. The grant is based on the number of validated volunteer hours completed between June 25, 2020 and October 31st, 2020. Student volunteers receiving the Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB) ($1,250 monthly) are also eligible to apply for a CSSG.

The new Canada Student Service Grant (CSSG) aims to encourage young people to take part in service activities that will help them support their communities’ COVID-19 response and gain invaluable experience.  

Administered by WE Charity, the CSSG is a one-time payment available at five levels, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. The amount will vary based on the number of hours each volunteer completes, with $1,000 provided for each 100 hours completed, up to a maximum of $5,000 for 500 hours.

Eligibility

To be eligible to participate in a CSSG opportunity, a person must:

  • be enrolled and attending a part-time or full-time post-secondary education (PSE) during Spring/Summer 2020 and/or Fall 2020 at an accredited institution; or
  • have graduated from PSE no earlier than December 2019; and
  • be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, First Nations, Métis or Inuit, or have Refugee status; and
  • confirm they are able to participate in the CSSG if they are under 18 years of age by allowing us to contact their parent or guardian via email

To be eligible to receive the CSSG grant at the completion of the volunteer opportunity, a person must:

  • be a post-secondary student or recent graduate, 30 years of age or younger by December 31st, 2020, who meets the eligibility criteria including the required number of volunteer service hours
  • not be an international student or a person who has or is currently receiving the CERB ($2,000 monthly)

Study Alone

Unless you’ve got a couple of friends who are super-serious about getting down to business, stay away from group study sessions because they tend to get off-topic pretty quickly. Save the social time till after you’ve handed in your test.

Create Your Perfect Study Area

The place where you study should be quiet, comfortable and free from distractions. Go to your room, close the door and kill as many distractions as possible – like music, television, and even the internet and your phone. If you don’t have your own room that you can sneak away to, consider studying at the library instead

Get it All Out

Your study materials, that is. Before you dig in, make sure you have all your books, notes, study guides and writing utensils in front of you. Don’t give yourself another excuse to get up and rummage around.

Now that you’ve got all your notes in front of you, open up a pack of index cards. As you read through the important facts, rewrite them in Q&A form on the cards. Second Career: Get Skills-training and Financial Support When You Qualify

What Second Career gives you

You can get new skills – those needed for jobs in demand now – and financial support when you qualify for Second Career.

Apply for up to $28,000 for costs including:

  • tuition
  • books
  • manuals, workbooks or other instructional costs
  • transportation
  • basic living allowance (maximum $410 per week)
  • child care

How you qualify for Second Career

As a start, you qualify for Second Career when:

  • you have been laid off and have not been working
  • you have been laid off and are working a temporary job just to cover costs

If you’re receiving Employment Insurance (EI), or have in the past, you can still apply.

When preparing your application, you also have to show:

  • how long you have been unemployed, or working your temporary job, and looking for work
  • places you have applied and positions you have applied for (e.g. cover letters, CV and responses from potential employers)
  • what level of education you reached
  • where you worked before, for how long and what skills you needed for that work
  • what skills you want to get and where you can get trained in them
  • information showing the skills and job you want to train for are in demand

What you pay into Second Career

When you apply to Second Career, you have to show the costs to be covered during training.

You may have to pay part of these costs yourself. The amount you’ll have to pay is based on several things, starting with your gross (before tax) household income.

Financial information

You must provide information about:

  • your income
  • your household income (e.g. spouse)
  • current expenses

School information

You must research at least three training institutions to make sure they offer the training you need. Make sure to include:

  • at least one college of applied arts and technology
  • at least one private career college

Job market information

You must show that the skills you want to get – and the work you want to do – are needed by employers. This can be shown through:

  • job postings
  • news of future job opportunities (e.g. office expansion, new company)

Now that we are in the middle of lock down and have plenty of time on our hands, this is the perfect time to turn our focus onto something which most of us are guilty of neglecting: us. Perhaps one of the perks of social distancing is that it has given us some much-needed space. With less interaction with the outside world and other people, we do not have to worry about pleasing others and putting their needs over that of our own. Revisit an old skill

All of us have a kill that we have now stopped putting to use due to different reasons. Exercise helps you clear your mind as well as stay healthy and feel good. Taking out an hour or so to workout will bring positivity in your mindset too.

Remember the cupboard and the bookshelf that you were supposed to organize three months back? Now you can clear all the clutter and mess in your room and at your home. This will help relieve the stress as well as make you feel more comfortable and happy in your home. Scoring extra spaces to store by decluttering is an added advantage.

Set screen time

This is very important so that you don’t waste all your time binge-watching series and movies and not do anything productive. Too much screen time will affect your vision and make you feel irritable and sluggish. So put a cap on your screentime, and use your day to pursue other chores. these chores don’t have to always be productive, you can do something unproductive like playing ludo with your sibling, just because it’ll be fun.

There’s no hurry to get up early and thus we go to sleep late. but these erratic sleeping patterns may affect our sleep cycle. So make sure that you get enough sleep. Instead of staying up late, use this time to catch up on your sleep and reduce your sleep debt.
